Evaluation of a citizenship curriculum at mbo Rijnland, aimed at strengthening belief in one's own abilities

Researchers from the University of Humanistic Studies and teachers at mboRijnland are conducting an educational design study, investigating how teachers can promote belief in one's own abilities among mbo Rijnland students.

Description

In this two-year mixed-methods research and development project, staff from the University of Humanistic Studies are investigating how teachers can promote belief in one's own abilities among students at mbo Rijnland. The research is taking place in collaboration with Jaap Kraak, teacher-researcher at mboRijnland's Research Lab.

The project Wij maken het verschil (We make the difference) is a continuation of a previous one-year design study in which we developed and formatively evaluated a curriculum aimed at fostering mbo students' social and political belief in their own abilities.

Therefore, in this study we explore which rituals public VO schools in the Netherlands organise, what they find desirable in this context, and what concerns teachers and school leaders identify in relation to organising rituals in their schools. We are curious about to what extent rituals at public VO schools contribute to person formation and community building.

The study includes these components:

  • A broad survey of students' belief in their own abilities in three central domains: study, profession and citizenship.
  • Conducting and formative evaluation of a curriculum that aims to increase students' belief in their own abilities in two citizenship domains, namely the political and social domains, in line with the Citizenship Agenda (Burgerschapsagenda) mbo 2017-2021.
  • Connecting participating students with civil society organisations in Leiden (Municipality of Leiden; Studio Moio and Learning with the City).
  • Making the lesson series and a teacher's guide publicly available.
