  • Duration: 2016-2018
  • Status: completed

Researchers at Marnix Academie, iPabo and the University of Humanistic Studies have conducted research at two primary schools to study the knowledge, skills and qualities that teachers have to build learning groups out of classes that receive newcomer children, and to help the children discover the world and each other together.

Results

The results have been presented in the publication De wereld in de klas. Hoe leerkrachten leerlingen uitdagen elkaars wereld en de wereld daar buiten te ontdekken, edited by Bas van den Berg and Isolde de Groot

Description

In this two-year research and development project, colleagues of iPabo, Marnix Academie and the University of Humanistic Studies studied the knowledge, skills and qualities possessed by primary school teachers to turn classes receiving newcomer children into learning groups.

The teachers stimulate all children to discover, together, both the big and fascinating world around and each other’s own lives and experiences. Once these pupils continue on to secondary and higher education, they will approach the world as self-aware, inquisitive and creative students, and will feel better equipped to find their own way.

The teachers of Olympiaschool in Amsterdam and Bloemberg in Nijmegen are masters at supporting pupils in their quest. The  publication and results were presented at a symposium in November 2018.

This project was launched from within an existing framework for research and development, called the Centre of Expertise Personal Mastership (CEPM).
