Field of Research: Exploring Listening in Healthcare, Society, and Business

The focus of this research is to assess and demonstrate the quality—or lack—of listening in various contexts, shedding light on the often unconscious incompetence in listening skills. While many believe their listening abilities are adequate, those on the receiving end often feel unheard.

This research aims to identify and address this gap, contributing to meaningful learning and improvement processes on micro, meso, and macro levels. Our work is rooted in a care ethics perspective, emphasizing listening as an essential relational and ethical skill rather than reducing it to mere techniques.

Key Details of the Research:

Primary Methodology: Quantitative research utilizing translated questionnaires and assessment tools.

Focus Areas:

o Instruments offering feedback on listeners’ attitudes and relational dynamics.

o Tools that evaluate listening at the team level.

o Specific instruments designed to assess listening skills among CEOs and supervisors.

The instruments can be directly applied in training to listening, therefore there is a great practical benefit. We work with a set of 50 existing English instruments. In the choice of instruments we work from a care ethic perspective, where (too) instrumental operationalizations of listening concepts are considered less interesting. We therefor choose assessment questionnaires that provide mirror information for the listener about attitude, perception and relationship skills.

If you have a passion for understanding and enhancing listening practices in healthcare, society, or business, and the commitment to undertake this meaningful research, we encourage you to reach out.
