Professor Anja Machielse gives public (farewell) lecture
July 11, 2023
Anja Machielse has been associated with the University for Humanistic Studies since 2012; since 2015 as associate professor and from 2020 as professor of Humanism and Social Resilience. Her research focuses on the meaning of social relationships for personal life and the broader community. The tension between individual autonomy and social environment demands is central to her work.
"We are grateful for the enormous contribution Anja Machielse has made to both research and teaching at our university," says Rector Joke van Saane. "Her research on important themes such as loneliness and social resilience is not only appreciated in academic circles; she also makes a difference in practice. Anja knows how to bridge the gap between policy and society like no other. She has led numerous research projects in collaboration with social partners, making research accessible to a wide audience. Our students and Ph.D. students have always praised her knowledge and didactics. Moreover, under her inspiring leadership as Director of Education (from 2016 to 2020), education has made several important quality strides."
Anja Machielse will remain associated with our university in the coming years as associate professor of 'Social Resilience of the Elderly', project leader of the ZonMw project 'Resilience after Loss', and Confidential Advisor for Scientific Integrity. Anja Machielse: "There is still much to do in loneliness and resilience. I want to remain committed to that in the coming years."

On Oct. 11, Anja Machielse will give a public farewell lecture on the occasion of her retirement as professor of Humanism and Social Resilience at the University of Humanistic Studies. In her speech, she will address the importance of resilience in a society in which more and more people are dropping out because they cannot or do not want to participate. "We owe a lot to Anja's qualities and tireless efforts," said Rector Joke van Saane. We are therefore pleased that she will remain connected to our university."
