International Seminar: Education for Democratic Intercultural Citizenship (20 June 2019)

Education can play a central role in preparing youngsters for life in a democratic society, for active participation and greater social justice and tolerance in all domains of society. Given this important task for education, it is necessary to train a new generation of educational professionals that can contribute to this development.

Seven European Universities are working together in the Erasmus Strategic Partnership EDIC+. They have developed a joint curriculum for students and PhD-researchers of teacher education and educational studies. Each university organised and implemented a module and together they offered an intensive programme (www.uvh.nl/edic). This seminar is devoted to examining and discussing these modules in parallel sessions. New perspectives on Education for Democratic Intercultural Citizenship will be developed.

The seminar starts with the launching of the book Education for Democratic Intercultural Citizenship and by presenting the first examples to a representative of the European Union and to Eduard Nazarski, director of Amnesty International/the Netherlands.

Next, the modules and relevant topics will be presented and discussed in parallel sessions.

This will be followed by a panel discussion: Reflections on Education for Democratic Citizenship Education and its Future with Nimrod Aloni (Tel Aviv), Ivor Goodson (Brighton), Helen Haste (Bath, Harvard), Fritz Oser (Fribourg) and Jasmine Sim (Singapore). The seminar ends with the Valedictory Speech by Wiel Veugelers: 'Learning and Teaching in Critical-Democratic Citizenship Education'.
